Universal Rules
Rally Scoring Point is scored on every serve. 25 points wins the game, must win by two up to 30 points, game cap. In playoffs on third game, 15 points wins third game, 20 pt cap. 4/24/08
Let Serves Serves touching net, crossing over onto opponent's court are in play. Touching the antenna is a violation. (Antenna where evident, pole if no antenna available.) 1/21/08
Crossing Center Line w/Hand Crossing the center line is allowed with the hand (up to the wrist) and the foot as long as any part of hand/foot is contacting or 'shadowing' the line at all times. 1/21/08
End of Match Buzzer, Last Serve Last serve is called after the match buzzer has sounded and a side out or point has been awarded to the serving team. If the buzzer sounds and the server is in the service area, and appears to be ready to serve, that is not the last serve. If the buzzer sounds and a replay is called, the point must be played out before last serve is called. The important phrase is "appears ready to serve." Once the server is ready, the point has started even if the head ref hasn't called for service; and if the buzzer sounds after this moment, the point must be completed before last serve is called, i.e. if there is a replay of the point, the server gets the ball back and this is not the last serve, because the point hasn't been completed. 3/25/05
Ball-on Calls Head Ref shall call a "ball-on" whenever a ball from a different match enters onto the court or into the air space of the court when the match ball is still in play. Then the head ref shall call for a replay of the point. Line judges shall yell for "ball-on" to stop play and call attention to the head ref. Players are not allowed to call "ball-on" unless it is for a safety issue, such as the ball entering the court near the net and may interfere with the play in progress. Balls crossing in the service area behind the back line are not necessarily a ball-on, the ball must enter onto the court. 3/25/05
Head Referee Duties Head referee of match, at every point, must check both teams for readiness then check if server is ready to serve. Receiving teams should have time to get into ready positions to receive serve. Generally, if the receiving team players are looking toward the server and stationary for at least one second. The referee should be looking at the serving team getting ready, then to the server, and then blows whistle for service. 3/25/05
Down Referee Duties - Other net ref Down referee's responsibilities are to check on the rotation of the receiving team at service, and the disposition of players (spiker, blockers, setters) during a play at the net. Generally, a down ref should not see a spiked ball hit the floor or a dig, the down ref's attention is on the spiker/blockers to see if a net contact has occurred before/during/after the spike. Once the players have landed the down ref should be looking at the center line to see if any crossover occurs by the feet of the players at the net. 3/25/05
Line Judge Duties Line judges' main concern is with where the ball contacts the floor near the lines. Open hand palm down or pointing at the contact if the ball is judged 'in bounds'. Open hand palm pointing behind if the ball is judged 'out of bounds'. Hand signals should be given at all times even if the ball is only just 'near' the line as the head ref may have been blocked from viewing the ball contact and needs to get the signal from the line judge. If having conversations during judging, please try to be watching the match instead of looking at who the conversation is with. Secondary concern for line judges are ball-on calls. Should yell 'ball on' to the head ref whenever a ball crosses into the court and the game ball is still live. Another secondary concern is players crossing into another court. Players cannot contact the line or court surface of another court. They may play the ball while in the air space of another court, but if while making contact or after making contact with the ball and the ball is still live, and then the player makes contact with the adjacent court, it will be ruled a violation. More on this rule below in 'Crossing into adjacent courts'. Line judges should take care to move out of the way if the ball comes near them while in play. 6/29/08
Lines and Antennae - Fairfax gym Lines of the middle court are in white, side courts are in orange except for the sideline near the bleachers, it is the last green line. This takes care of the fact that the side courts are narrow because of the gym layout. Antennae for the middle court are the poles, side courts are the poles on the sideline near the middle court and the antennae near the bleachers. Again this takes care of the fact that the side courts are narrow and Westside allows spikers to play the ball over the net outside the sideline near the middle court, but still have to get the ball inside the lines to be good. The antennae near the bleachers prevent play too close to the bleachers. 3/25/05
Take Down of Equipment All teams involved in the last match(es) played in gym must help with taking down of poles and nets. Sunday at West Torrance in the pavilion gym, bringing in the bleachers from outside. Tuesday at Fairfax, Reverse Co-ed in the small gym, put all equipment into small gym storage room, only scoresheet and pen goes back to the main gym. Common courtesy by all makes for easy work for all. 11/15/03
Crossing into adjacent courts Players are not allowed to cross into adjacent courts at any time. A player is allowed to reach into the air space of an adjacent court, but not to touch the lines or court surface. Crossing or jumping over corners is not allowed, remember there are line judges sitting on corners. A player can go around the corner of an adjacent court and play a ball in the adjacent service area and attempt to bring it back into play. 11/15/03 |
Exceptions, last edit on 10/6/05
Reverse Co-ed male rule Male palyers may not participate in blocks or in illegal offensive actions. Illegal offensive action examples: any spike from anywhere on the court, a jumpset when the ball has been contacted when fully above the net and directed over the net. In practice, referees should watch that a male player have at least one foot in contact with the floor when directing the ball over the net. Exception: if a male player is in a "lay-out" position, i.e., has leaped, is parallel with the floor, and directs the ball over the net, that will be considered a legal contact. 10/6/05
Borrowing players A team can borrow only one player (male or female) at any time when the team has four or five roster players at the gym. The player borrowed must be on a team from the same division as the borrowing team. Exception: At Tuesday/Fairfax, teams can borrow from the other league only if that player borrowed is listed on a roster of a team in the borrowing team's league. Teams borrowing from the other league must ask the player if he/she is listed in both leagues. 10/9/02
Crossing center line between courts Any gym with adjoining courts have the center line extend to the wall. The center line cannot be crossed at any time when the ball is live, even outside the court lines, ie. between the courts. This is a safety issue. Exception: If a court is lone court, like at the small gym at Fairfax, the center line is only within the court boundaries. 10/9/02
Crossing service line Server is allowed a single step onto the court during service attempt in the small gym at Fairfax. The server cannot start on the court at service start, must start behind the service line. At times when school equipment is stored near the courts and restricts the service area, a single step onto the court during service attempt will be allowed. Sometimes occurrs in the pavilion gym at West Torrance with the wrestling mats. 10/9/02
